Senator Discusses Legal Recognition of Gender Bill on John Murray Show

28.06.2013

Senator Katherine Zappone was interviewed by Miriam O'Callaghan on the John Murray Show about her new Bill which provides for the recognition of the legal gender of transgender people.

Miriam is joined in the studio by Sam, a 19 year old transgender man and his father Simon and a married couple; Helen and Philippa. As Phillippa is transgender, she and Helen are concerned that they would be forced to divorce under current Government proposals in order for Phillipa's gender to be recognised. We hear both stories, Sam's and Philippa's, that underline the importance and necessity of the new legislation put forward by Senator Zappone.

Senator Zappone joins the conversation and speaks about her motivation for drafting such an overdue bill and the importance of providing for the right of transgender people in Ireland to be recognised in the law as their preferred gender.

As Sam says in the interview when asked how would the bill coming law change his life; "It will change so much!"
