Senator Zappone concerned at Margaretta D’arcy Detention

17.01.2014

Senator Zappone wrote to the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, today to express concern for peace activist Margaretta D'arcy. The Senator looks forward to the Minister's reply at his earliest convenience. Her letter can be read below.

Dear Minister,

I would like to bring to your attention the situation of Ms. Margaretta D'arcy. Ms. D'arcy was imprisoned earlier this week for refusing to sign a bond to uphold the law and to avoid unauthorised areas of Shannon Airport. She had received a three month suspended sentence for illegal incursion on the runway at Shannon Airport.

Ms. D'arcy is 79 years of age and, I understand, is suffering from cancer and Parkinson's Disease. Can you confirm whether Limerick Prison is in a position to meet her medical needs?  In addition, given her age and medical condition I ask that you give consideration to making an order for her temporary release from prison.

Yours sincerely,

Katherine Zappone, PhD.
