Senator Zappone represented the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality at the IHRC Roundtable on the Asylum Process and Direct Provisions System on April 1st.
The panel that included Dr Mary Murphy( Acting Chair of IHREC Designate), Sophie Magennis (Head of Office, United Nations High Commission for Refugees Ireland), David Moriarty (Jesuit Refugee Service) and Senator Katherine Zappone discussed the human rights and equality standards of current Asylum seeking processes and considered the role of relevant stakeholders in upholding the human rights and equality of people in direct provisions centres.
Senator Zappone emphasized the fact that, ” There are international standards. However, these are not implemented in Ireland.”
She concluded by encouraging the IHREC to consider using their power of inquiry on the issue of direct provision.
